Gallienus ruled as emperor from A.D. 260-268 during the tumultuous era of the Crisis of the Third Century. He not only faced external threats from invading barbarian tribes but also 8 internal rebellions from his own governors and generals vying for power. Gallienus displayed military prowess and diplomatic acumen, successfully repelling numerous incursions and preserving the territorial integrity of the empire.
During his reign he issued coins with his moneyer Antoniniani to honour the Gods, asking for their protection against these troubles. These coins were unique as they all contained an real or mythical animal, giving them the name "Gallienus zoo coins". The ones we have are in his Doe series, meant to honor the goddess Diana. It was likely believed these coins would bring luck to hunting.
